Two New Knees, One Big Dream

When I first started thinking about this blog, I knew I wanted to capture more than just the steps I take on the trail.  I wanted to capture the before.  The limiting beliefs, the struggle, the doubt, and the preparation that happens before my boots touch Georgia dirt on the Appalachian Trail.

The truth is, I haven’t been able to hike the way I want for years.  Bad knees and type 2 diabetes have kept me from the outdoors I love.   Even something as simple as a backpack strap not closing around my waist is a reminder of how far I still have to go.

But here’s the thing: I refuse to let that be the ending of my story.  This October I’ll be getting my first knee replaced, and a few months later, the second.  My body is being rebuilt, step by step, for the miles ahead.

This blog is my accountability, my journal, and my invitation.  I’m sharing the small wins – like dropping pounds, building muscle, or tackling a short New England hike before surgery – and the setbacks too.

My dream is big, and all that know me, know I dream big.  In nine years, I’ll take two new knees and walk 2190 miles from Georgia to Maine.  Six months of mountains, rivers, roots, rocks, and weather.  Six months of learning who I am when it’s just me, my pack, and the trail.

This post marks the second step of millions.  If you are reading this, I hope you’ll walk alongside me – whether you’re chasing your own impossible dream or just curious about mine.

Every step counts, and your company means a lot.
